The Historian as a Detective with Dr. Elysa Engelman

The world around us is filled with primary source material and clues about the past. It’s also filled with legends and stories that may or may not be “true.” Join Dr. Elysa Engelman to learn how to help your students navigate the art of inquiry and decipher the world around us. She’ll share how researching a historic house with a rumored Underground-Railroad connection led to a different story – a fugitive slave whose experience in New London triggered national coverage in the 1850s. She’ll also look at how you can use artwork, stories, and primary sources to help students unpack the impact of memory and myth on our popular understanding of the past. Melville, Moby-Dick and the Morgan with Melville Scholar Dr. Mary K Bercaw Edwards

Join Melville Scholar, Dr. Mary K. Bercaw Edwards and Mystic Seaport staff to learn all about one of the great American classics, Moby-Dick. Bercaw Edwards, Associate Professor, University of Connecticut, is an accomplished Melville scholar. Her books include Cannibal Old Me (2009), Herman Melville’s Whaling Years (2004), and Melville’s Sources (1987). This program will include a special Moby-Dick themed tour of the Charles W. Morgan, lecture, and pizza! All teachers, afterschool professionals, and their families (up to four people total with teacher ID) will receive free Mystic Seaport admission! New and improved website for teachers launched
Mystic Seaport is happy to announce that after months of redesign and the thoughtful incorporation of teacher feedback, they have launched the new Mystic Seaport for Educators website. (http://educators.mysticseaport.org/) If you are not already familiar with the project, MSE is a collaborative website, created by educators and featuring hundreds of primary sources from the Museum’s world-class collection. Maritime-focused artifacts, documents, maps, lectures, scholar interviews, and lesson plans come to life on the website and serve as easy to access tools for any teacher’s classroom. This version of the website features a new design along with new features such as the Search Resources Tool and Lesson Plans, and new informational pages like Behind the Scenes and Upcoming Events! Mystic Seaport for Educators Summer 2016 Fellowships Available
Mystic Seaport is currently looking for creative, enthusiastic, and dedicated teachers to participate in the Mystic Seaport for Educators (MSE) website research and content creation program. The MSE Summer Fellowship program focuses on the research and development of the online features. Educators selected for the program spend time in training, and working with Museum staff to explore the collections and write content for the website. Completed projects are then transformed into website features by Museum staff, the following school year. Click here to watch a short video about the program.
