So the questions is, “can I eat snow that isn’t yellow, or brown, or anything but white”. The answer?  Well, yes and no.  A lot of it has to do with where you live and the weather conditions that were occurring before it snowed.

Let me explain.  We all know that snow is made from water but snow can also have dirt, soot and chemical pollutants in it.  Snow acts like a filter as it comes down from the sky.  So the safest snow to eat would be after the snow has fallen awhile.  Some scientists assure us that the small quantities of snow that we might eat contain very low toxin levels.  If you live in farmland or where there is a lot of dirt that may be flying around you may be eating quite a bit of dirt mixed with your snow.  Some scientists disagree and state that they would never let urban children eat snow because of the amount of car exhaust which contains toluene, xylenes and benzene, a known carcinogen.

So discuss this with your children and make a decision together. This will help your children to gather information and make appropriate decisions.
