UV Safety Awareness

Summer is the season where most people enjoy outdoor activities. Picnics, vacations, and trips to the amusement park are all things that people look forward to in this season. While we enjoy these activities it is important to keep in mind that we still need to protect ourselves from the sun. Sun protection advice can be confusing and overwhelming, so here is some information to help break everything down.

UV Safety Awareness was developed to bring awareness to the harm that UV rays can cause. This cause also highlights the many ways that you can protect yourself from UV rays to keep you and your loved ones safe.

UV (Ultraviolet) rays are a type of radiation that comes from the sun, tanning beds and sun lamps. These rays are invisible and can change skin cells.

There are 3 types of UV rays:

UVA Rays: These are the longest in wavelength and penetrate deep into the skin. These rays contribute to aging, wrinkling, loose skin, sun spots and skin cancer.

UVB Rays: These rays damage the top layer of the skin and cause sunburn. They can damage the skin within 15 minutes of unprotected exposure.

UVC Rays: These rays are the shortest in length. They do not reach the Earth’s surface because the ozone layer absorbs all of the radiation.

Tips for protecting yourself from the sun:

  • Make sure you are using sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays. You can check this by looking at the sticker on the sunglass lens.
  • Wear a hat with a wide brim to protect your eyes.
  • Use SPF (Sun Factor Protection) lotions or sprays. Make sure that you buy Broad Spectrum SPF because it helps block both UVA and UVB rays.
  • Use at least SPF 30 when choosing a sunscreen.
  • Reapply your sunscreen every 2 hours, especially if you are going to be in water.

Getting enough sun is important, but knowing how to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays will help you enjoy your summer activities even more! Remember, don’t forget to pack your sunscreen!
