Keeping Current to Get Ahead: Spring into APAW with Staff!

I recently attended the 2026 National AfterSchool Association Convention in Washington, DC. When they asked how many people were first time attendees more than half raised their hands. This could mean a couple of things, 1) programs have faced incredible turnover and have to invest in professional development for staff, 2) there are more programs opening and thus a result in more staff, or 3) program leaders are recognizing staff for what they are, afterschool professionals.

Being an afterschool professional requires passion and curiosity for starters. While we know these things don’t pay the bills, it makes the work we do much more rewarding. We are often the connection between school and home that provides a place to unwind, learn, and allow kids to be themselves. Without a skilled workforce that knows how to engage them, guide them, and help them grow holistically we are just watching kids and the clock from 3 to 6.

The National AfterSchool Association started Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week (APAW) to lift up the important work and the people doing it to be recognized. This year it is April 20-24th. Host a family dinner, an awards ceremony for staff, or small tokens of appreciation throughout the week. Recognition goes a long way to motivate and retain staff. What investment are you making?
