Deep Dives – Cross Cultural Communication
Date: December 5, 2016
Time: 9:00 – 12:00 pm
Location: CASN Office, Building 1, Hartford
There is a compelling need for cross cultural skills as organizations respond to demographic changes, work toward eliminating health disparities, improve the quality of human services and meet regulatory and accreditation mandates. This seminar will help individuals to be more comfortable and skilled in relating to people of different identity groups and will facilitate the formation of strong working teams. Participants will be better able to recognize diversity issues and will learn how to respond productively. Cultural Competency refers to the ability of an individual or the capacity of an organization to respect and affirm cultural differences in order to serve diverse communities more effectively. One facet of cultural competence is the ability to communicate effectively in cross-cultural situations. The understanding of how we and others hear and interpret messages is the first and most crucial step to understanding cultural differences. The lack of understanding and empathy can lead to conflict and misunderstanding, stereotyping and biased behaviors.

In the second Supervision 101 session, we will cover working with diverse staff, developing and leading staff, leadership styles, and self-care. Participants will take away a better understanding of how they lead and practice strategies that will empower others to help them lead.

Double Deep Dives – Behavior Management: Building Positive Behavior & Strengthening Social and Emotional Skills
Date: December 16, 2016
Time: 9:00 – 12:00 pm
Location: CASN Office, Building 1, Hartford
Behavior management is one of the most common challenges facing afterschool programs. Brand new staff and seasoned professionals alike are faced with the challenge of developing approaches to classroom management and individualized support that help each unique child and each unique group to be successful and appropriate every afternoon. Many approaches to behavior management focus on the skills of the educator, without considering that the ability of each student to self-regulate is also an essential factor. In this unique, day long training, learn to identify where on the continuum from foundational to advanced your students’ social and emotional skills are, and find the right level of intervention to succeed in building appropriate behaviors while also creating opportunities for social and emotional growth. Learn about the three-tiered approach and explore tools at each tier level to advance not only your behavior management skills, but also the social and emotional skills of the students that you teach.
Workshop Fee
Member $50.00
Non Member $75.00
