10 Games That Will Make Your Kids Behave Better

When kids arrive at afterschool, they are often looking for fun ways to relax and decompress. However, frustrations and tough feelings from a long day at school often follow them into afterschool and can be hard to shake. It can be challenging to find games and activities that will keep kids engaged, and even more challenging to help your students develop the social and emotional skills to overcome a rough day and make good choices in your program. In this fun and dynamic workshop, learn 10 crowd-pleasing games that simultaneously let students laugh, play, and blow off some steam while building key skills like self-regulation, patience, kindness, teamwork, and communication.  For each activity, modifications for ages 5-12 and mixed age groups will be included. Students will have so much fun, they won’t even realize they’re learning! Come ready to play!

De-Escalation: How to Respond to Defiant Children and Overwhelming Situations

Positive behavior management strategies are intended to help children make good choices.  But what about children who continuously struggle?  How do you handle situations where a child is fighting, running, screaming, destroying things, or otherwise endangering him/herself or others?  Serious behavioral issues are a missed opportunity.  Instead of trying to contain or manage the problem, we could and should be equipping children for happiness and success in afterschool and in life.  In this intensive day-long Double Deep Dive session, we’ll take a close look at why children escalate and how to deescalate them, including hands-on, powerful tools and approaches that turn the most challenging behaviors into meaningful opportunities for lasting growth and social-emotional learning while keeping children and staff safe.  Participants will receive opportunities to practice new skills and troubleshoot their own real-life scenarios.
